La Isla de los Monos is a beautiful 618-acre island in the middle of the Amazon River not far from Iquitos. The island is home to a rehabilitation center that focuses on reintroducing injured and orphaned monkeys back into the jungle where they belong. The island is home to about 200 monkeys from 8 different species. Pictured here is a red uacari having an afternoon snack. If you like monkeys and ever find yourself without a place to stay in the middle of the Amazon, the island puts up volunteers for both short and extended stays. The fact that the founder/director reminded me a lot of John Hammond was almost as enjoyable for me as it was to have monkeys crawling on my face.
