Dope. Something you can smoke, wear, use as an adjective, or it could to serve as the name for a totally great movie that just came out. From the trailer, it appeared that this would be an entertaining movie and it didn’t disappoint. Here’s why you should see Dope.
Just by the list of those involved in the creation of this movie should intrigue you. Some of the producers include Nina Yang Bongiovi, Sean Combs, Rick Famuyiwa (who also directed), Forest Whitaker, and Pharrell Williams; an extensive and diverse group of people to be so involved with a movie. The budget to make the film was at about $700,000 and on opening weekend it grossed $6,100,000. As August, the movie has grossed $16,760,000. Not bad, not bad at all.
Narrated by Forest Whitaker, Dope takes place it in a not so great city in California where three geeks are just trying to do what they love and endure the struggles of high school. It’s a comedy/drama where the struggle gets real when the three teens get caught in the crossfires of a party gone wrong. Much to the multi-talented talented and brainy Malcolm, played by up and coming actor Shameik Moore, surprise, he finds a whole lotta marijuana stuffed in his bag. The movie follows the teens and the very creative ways of finding a home for the dope, which of course comes with many sticky situations.
Dope mostly focuses on the main character, Malcolm. A kid who is slightly obsessed with 90s culture, plays in a bad, and who is also super intelligent. My favorite part about this movie is that they didn’t use the same actors/actresses they always use for movies. A relatively unknown actor as the main character who nailed his part was completely refreshing. He was hilarious and it was easy to feel empathy for him at the same time. Malcolm ultimately finds ways to be a strong, confident young man coming from a rough neighborhood.
Also, remember Denise Huxtable played by Lisa Monet? Well, appearantly she reproduced with Mr. Lenny Kravitz and they made one beautiful baby girl. Although, she is all grown up in this movie, the first time you see her on screen you wonder where you’ve seen her before. I thought she did an amazing job. All the ladies in this movie did. The main girl, played by Kiersey Clemmons, was my favorite, though. Clemmons did an amazing job at playing Diggy. How does someone who plays a girl who dresses like a dude, still look way gorgeous? She was awesome. Even the druggie Lily, played by Chanel Iman, was hilarious. I mean, she’s naked a lot, so maybe that’s why you’re into it, I was more so enjoying her situation on drugs. Hilarious.
All in all, this movie was awesome and it didn’t look like many people around where I live went to see it. Well, they missed out. I highly recommend seeing this movie whether in theaters or on DVD. You won’t regret it. Enjoy your dope.
