Before I begin, let me be perfectly clear. I am not an expert or even know much about mixed martial arts or UFC. I did American karate growing up and have taken some boxing classes, but that’s about it. So, why am I writing about Ronda Rousey you ask? Because she is badass and intrigues me, duh. I mean, did you see her performance in Furious 7?
One of Rousey’s past fights was on television recently and I watched this woman completely destroy her opponent. It was amazing. Ronda Rousey is amazing. She’s quick, she’s strong and she’s so damn good. So of course, while I was sitting there with a smart phone in my hand, I decided to Google her. Turns out she was even more awesome than I thought. She has 11 wins in her career and the undefeated UFC Champion. So when I heard about this upcoming match, I was excited to see how she did. Unfortunately, the match didn’t end in her favor.
This past Saturday, Rousey defended her title against world champion boxer Holly Holm. This match was interesting to me because Holm is “new” to world of UFC. To go from a life of throwing punches to a world where anything goes would be an adjustment. Although it seemed that her ground game would need some work in the beginning of her new career, she has fared well, remaining undefeated leading up to her match against Rousey.
It’s easy to speculate as to why Rousey lost this fight, primarily it seems like she went in like a wild child without any plan of attack or set up for a take down; or, her coach camp failed miserably to prepare her for what awaited. It was a high-pressure, high-profile fight with a record breaking live attendance. She was probably even a little too confident, which you probably should be when stepping into a cage, but not so much that your opponent can take you off guard. If you even have a doubt of yourself, you’re done. After one brutal round of taking repetitive jabs and hooks to the face while running around the cage, Rousey met her fate in the second round thanks to a 50-pound pressure creating kick to the face and neck. This was the incredible part to me. Holm's craft is boxing and kickboxing. It wasn’t a punch that ended this match. It was a swift kick to the head. Holm knocked Rousey out with a kick! She clearly has a high enough range to reach, but even so, a kick that high and also hard enough to knock out Ronda Rousey is insane to me.
I was pretty bummed by Rousey’s first lost in her career, but it will make for an interesting rematch. It will be fun to see what Rousey brings back to the cage in regards to composure and plan of attack. Holm must be feeling pretty darn good right about now. Still undefeated and took down the most famous celebrity fighter in the world of women's MMA. Either way, I’m thrilled that these women are making headlines for being AMAZING fighters. It’s encouraging, motivating and empowering for women to see this. I’m looking forward to another match featuring these two or even just the next Ronda Rousey match against whoever. I have a feeling she will be back stronger and more fierce than ever. I’m excited to see all she can accomplish and hope that this loss can only build her up rather than bring her down; no pun intended.
