Honorable Mentions: Unsane – Sterilize, The Jesus and Mary Chain – Damage and Joy, Cloakroom – Time Well, Ex Nuns – Ex Nuns, Godflesh – Post Self, Kendrick Lamar – Damn
10. Slowdive – Slowdive
Dreamy and sweet. Picked up right from their seminal record Souvlaki.
Songs to Check: Sugar for the Pill, Slomo
9. Sunless – Urraca
Good clean family friendly dissonant technical angular chaotic suffocating blackened death metal. Another band that’s getting the high praise that it deserves.
Songs to Check: Wishes Fallen on Deafened Ears, Born of Clay
8. Remo Drive – Greatest Hits
This album is the only emo pop punk you need to touch this year, it’s hit after hit and makes you want to be 19. They just also happen to be straight from Minneapolis and they happen to be blowing up, and are probably 19. Awesome Joyce Manor worship.
Songs to Check: Name Brand, Art School, Crash Test Rating
7. Converge – The Dusk in Us
Almost 30 years into a musical career and these boys can still write crushing and interesting music. Although it hasn’t impacted me the way previous Converge releases have (ask my 2 Converge tattoos), The Dusk in Us still has what you need in a Converge album. The riffs, the snarl, the passion.
Songs to Check: Under Duress, Broken By Light, Trigger, Reptilian
6. The National – Sleep Well Beast
Probably one of my favorite bands ever (since I am a 20 something white guy), and although this album has a couple hiccups, it’s an amazing addition to their almost untouchable run of albums. Amazing, incredible, almost perfect band.
Songs to Check: Guilty Party, Carin at the Liquor Store, Nobody Else Will Be There
5. Spectral Voice – Eroded Corridors of Unbeing
The heaviest thing to come out of 2017 and it's good. Like really really good. If you like death metal at all, you’ll like this. Also the album artwork is something Mom should hang on the fridge.
Song to check: Visions of Psychic Dismemberment (you have to love the titles)
4. Drab Majesty – The Demonstration
Something about this album makes you feel like you are in an 80’s movie and you are the bad guy at the prom. It takes everything good about Depeche Mode and New Order and shoves them together and adds some gigantic choruses. Ultimate driving at night music.
Songs to Check: Dot in the Sky, 39 by Design
3. Glassjaw – Material Control
Are you kidding me, somehow GJ can go from not making a full album since 2002, give 2 amazing EP’s in 2010, then just drop Material Control seemingly out of thin air and it maintains pace? Truly the kings of post-hardcore or whatever you want to call it.
Songs to Check: New White Extremity, Golgotha
2. Chelsea Wolfe – Hiss Spun
Chels made the top of my list in 2015 with Abyss and Hiss Spun continues her descent into doom and sludge and its pay offs tremendously (and sounds crazy good live). This would be the top of my list if it wasn’t for that number 1….
Songs to check: 16 Psyche, Vex
1. Power Trip – Nightmare Logic
I rate my albums on two things. How much I enjoyed it, and how often I came back to it. This album tops it for both. The riffs, the aggression, the catchiness. The payoff is equal parts headbang and tongue in cheek, my favorite combo. It didn’t leave my turntable for longer than a week all year.
Songs to Check: Executioner’s Tax (Swing of the Axe), Nightmare Logic, Soul Sacrifice
