Mudface is the 2015 release of Redman, it is 13 tracks and only 35 minutes long. While Redman goes hard on almost every track the beats are weak and the album does not really have any vision. It feels as if these songs were thrown together so that an album could be put out.
“Wus Really Hood” has my least favorite beat on the album, It is trying too much to be like early 2000 Neptunes while not sounding nearly as good. Redman does not fit over top of it, he sounds out of place and uncomfortable. The whistle on “Beastin’ (MCA) is the most distracting thing I have ever heard in a beat. So much so that I can not even pay attention to what Redman is rapping. “Gettin’ Inside” is one of the better beats on the album even though it sounds a little 80s at points. “N***a Like Me” is a decent beat though it could knock more, thankfully Redman goes hard on his verses.
“Dopeman” is one of the chintziest beats I have ever heard, there is basically no low end and the high hat is the loudest thing in the mix. It sounds awful. “Let It Go” has the best beat hands down on the album - the bass hits and Redman fits over top of it. “Bars” is a good song. The beat is decent and Redman delivers the namesake in spades. “High 2 Come Down” is my least favorite song by a mile, the beat is weak and Redman is lyrically the weakest on this song. I do not really care for “Won’t Be Fiendin.” The track is too much like a ballad for me and it feels out of place on this album. “Undeniable” is another weak beat and the two drum loops don’t seem to be in time with each other. “Go Hard” is decent beat-wise and Redman goes in.
This album is mediocre in my opinion, the beats here are not good enough. As such it distracts from Redman’s verses which are mostly solid. Hopefully on his next project he will choose better beats.
