Lizzo is a singer and rapper hailing from Minneapolis, where I first saw her alongside St. Paul & the Broken Bones. She just recently signed a major label deal with Atlantic and Coconut Oil is her first project since joining the label. Featuring diverse production from gospel to trap. Songs like “Phone” “Good As Hell” and “Coconut Oil” shine, while “Worship” and “Deep” are forgettable.
“Phone” takes a pretty common occurrence and puts this awesome bass line behind it. “Where the hell my phone”? She asks shortly after waking up from a crazy night. Having been left behind by her friends she tries to figure out the whereabouts of her phone. Realizing finally that was in her hand the whole time.
The gospel vibe and trap drums of “Coconut Oil” have made it my favorite song. Starting out with the Organ and flute solo was a great idea. The drums sound good and Lizzo fits well on the production. Everything about the song is well done.
Coconut Oil while fun will probably forgotten by years end. “Phone” and “Good as Hell” are hella fun, while “Coconut Oil” is the somber ending that the EP needed. While I have heard better EPs this year, this one is probably the most fun.
