I’ve been wanting to talk about Little Simz for a while.
I missed her 2015 album A Curious Tale of Trials + Persons, but came back to it early in 2016. It is a fantastic album. The production, lyrics, and overall cohesiveness of it is spectacular. A clear standout is the track, “Dead Body.” The spooky production with its guttural synths, dog barks, and disembodied squealing background vocals set the stage perfectly for Simz’s tale of whether she’ll sell her soul by the day's end.
The verses are a dark look into the life of person contemplating the end. “I just might sell my soul. Cause I don't feel like I am a part of the world no more. Will anybody miss me when I’m gone? Have you ever seen a dead body.” The way Little Simz raps on this is insane. She seems like she is slipping through a timestream the way she shifts from one cadence to the other, hitting a level in the second verse that most rappers don’t seem capable of. The black and white music video is also quite interesting, imagining Simz as a Vans-wearing undertaker with a dope hat. I love the use of the inverted color at points, even if I don’t understand the significance.
Little Simz is a dope rapper. Her album A Curious Tale of Trials + Persons is awesome. "Dead Body" is the perfect Halloween banger. The guttural synths, guitars and dog barks set the stage for Simz’s dark tale.
