Twelvyy released L.Y.B.B. (Resolution) on January 2nd and declared 2016 his “Last Year Being Broke”. Then Friday he put “Trips” on SoundCloud saying, “HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY BABY BROTHER ADDIE HERES A JEWEL FROM MY ARCHIVE FROM ME TO YOU FOR ALL THE BEAUTIFUL TRIPS AROUND THE ATLAS AND GALAXY WE HAVE TAKEN...” Apparently deciding to rap his wealth into existence on SoundCloud, like a digital The Secret.
I like the Harry Fraud produced Trips, and not just because it's hard not to like anything that follows the DJ drop, “La Musica de Harry Fraud.” Twelvyy does a good job with the beat. Numbing out into a deadpan when the beat drones, and building when the song does. Turning the hook about taking trips to Cali just to get good smoke into a declarative statement about repping New York that stands out from the song.
“Trips” on it's own isn't a case for Twelvyy having a standout year. But when you listen to L.Y.B.B. and realize his ability to switch up his flow and still hold a song together on his own you start to see the possibilities. He's going on tour with the Flatbush Zombies for the 3001: Laced Odyssey Tour, which is a 40 city tour. And A$AP Mob is showing signs of firing back to life after a quiet 2015 mourning A$AP Yams. If East Side Stevie (12vy) can maintain the pace that he's set so far this year he might breath truth into L.Y.B.B.
