Kembe X is a rapper from Chicago that I had never heard until last Sunday. So I played his newest single “Like Elijah” and I immediately thought it sounded old. Not in a bad way, but in a way that while generally enjoyable was not modernized enough to blow me away.
The song starts with a 15 second pointless intro that goes into the actual intro that leads into Kembe’s first verse. I especially like the line, “You can’t throw shade at the sun dumb motherfuckers, I’m from where it is cool to be dumb motherfuckers.” The chorus is catchy, because it is repeated so many times and it references the story of Elijah. It is ultimately forgettable and boring, it is not something that will be on mind next week or even tomorrow.
Kembe’s second verse is superior to his first, I wish that it was longer. It then goes into a 13 second breakdown which leads into a 30 second rant and then a 20 second instrumental outro. Now, the song is only t:30, so adding all that time up there 1:18 of this song where Kembe is not rapping, which his clearly his strong suit.
This track was enjoyable but undercooked, there is too much fat. It needed to have less intro, less rant, and less outro. This track would have been far better if the verses were longer and Kembe had more room to rap.
