The Girl Is Mine
I was scrolling through my Instagram the other day and was looking at some posts from Brandy and one peaked my interest. It was a post from billboard about a song called “The Girl Is Mine” which is a house mashup of Destiny’s Child “Girl” and Brandy’s “The Boy Is Mine”. Naturally, I looked up the song and saw one of the best music videos I have seen in awhile.
The video starts with the lead walking, a title then the name of the director. After these few seconds the song starts and we get a wider view of the lead, the building behind him, and the grass plots around him. Then around 10 seconds we notice that the lead is not normal. Everyone else is going backwards, while our lead is traveling forwards. we get more shots of people going backwards on bikes, skateboards, stairs, breakdancing backwards, and groceries returning into the bag they fell out of backwards. The we see two dudes run up on our lead and rough him up. Telling us that the world that our lead is in does not care much for people that aren’t like most everyone else. This is further established as our lead then walks past a woman who disgustedly stares him down.
In the next scene our lead is looking at a video advertisement for a private clinic. Side note: I love how the doctor’s words are synced up to the lyrics. Double side note the transition of sliding into the screen is perfect. The transition once we enter the clinic is also superb. we see our lead in therapy and working on fixing his “problem”. Side note: there is a nice little push of focus from him to the sign on the wall that says “You Gotta Push”, also the editing is really tight. Our next big forward momentum comes from when the titular girl walks on screen forwards. Obviously this leads our lead into walking past the girl’s room backwards and then past it again forwards to show that he like her is different. then they do some cute stuff and run away together.
I really love this video, the direction, the editing, the concept, and execution are all extremely well done. The song is also pretty decent, the vocal samples from Destiny’s Child and Brandy certainly elevate it. Then the well made video along with it just makes it even more enjoyable.
