What happens when one of the best rappers alive (Black Thought) and one of the best sample based producers (9th wonder) come together and make some music? In this case they made some keep-it-100, straight burn-down-the-forest FIRE!
Black Thought raps like the world is ending and this is his last verse ever, 9th brings it on the boards and styles p closes us out solidly.
The song starts with the driving sample of the drums, then Black thought comes in along with the melodic content of flutes, guitars and horns. Then at the end we get the original sample that sounds indian? I am not completely sure what culture it is from. Though it does sound it good.
The centerpiece here though is Black Thoughts world ending verse. ”When you see the sky darkening” you now he is coming to make “a rapper wind up as a John Doe”. Just seriously look at these lines.
“Yo, I probably began in the Rift Valley
In places untraceable by Rand McNally
Took a cobblestone trolley through a Mercer Street alley
The more championship rings than John Salley
Biochemically on par with Salvador Dali
I traveled to Tijuana to smack the federali
Who packing avocado toast like Mario Batali
I'm an ocean without a coast, going back to Cali nigga”
I can’t even begin to understand how lines like these come together in Black thought’s head. How? Especially “I traveled to Tijuana to smack the Federali. Who packing avocado toast like Mario Batali”. It is just the most ear catching line that I have heard in so long. This verse is just the best thing I have heard from a rapper in a while, like since Summertime 06. Not to forget to mention Styles P who does his best, but is ultimately overshadowed by the other verse.
This song is so fire, Black Thought probably ended some “careers.” 9th brings the heat with driving drums and varied and interest melodic content. Together they are just undeniably fantastic.
