I often don’t talk about how much I like pop musicor mainstream music, but I felt like I needed to tell you how much I liked Rihanna’s latest, ANTI. It is a solid and enjoyable album with some major hits: “Work”, “Kiss It Better”, “Needed Me”, “Yeah I Said It”, and “Same Ol’ Mistakes”. I want to specifically talk about “Needed Me” it has one of my favorite instrumentals on the album, made by DJ Mustard.
The song starts with the main sound for the song, a filtered synth line that sounds cool and brings a cool atmosphere to the instrumental. The bass line throughout the song is solid especially in the chorus, the drums like most of his stuff hit hard and sound great. The vocal sounds used for melody and harmony throughout are fantastic and make the whole thing sound so much bigger and more organic.
Rihanna thankfully took this instrumental, and with her team was able to make a song that is enjoyable, relatable, and suitable to her aesthetic. It is sexual and empowering in a society that tells women that they are nothing more than things to be used by men. Rihanna flips the script and says that men are dependent on women. Without women men are aimless unfocused and purposeless. More than that, Rihanna is a bad bitch, she ain’t going to claim not one of the men that have chased her. “Didn't they tell you that I was a savage? Fuck ya white horse and ya carriage, bet you never could imagine. Never told you you could have it”. The title is literally “Needed Me”, Rihanna doesn’t need you she “was fine on her own.”
