There are only a few songs that I find can get me through a tough day, songs like ‘***Flawless’, “Alright’, and then mainly Nina Simone songs. “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free” and “I Shall Be Released” are some personal favorites. Lately though one song has been, in essence, the lighthouse for my worst days.
Hearing “I Loves You Porgy” has gotten me through to the end of days which I was not sure if I was going to be able finish. Just to hear piano play at the beginning and then for Nina’s, unforgettable and undeniable, voice to come through the speaker is enough to relieve some of the worst stress. Her voice is just perfection, the way she delivers every word is hypnotic. Especially the first time she sings “I love you Porgy” the way she waits just adds so much emotion to the lyric. Then she continues throughout out the song to put so much emotion into every syllable and then adding the vibrato on top adds to this feeling of longing throughout the song.
Her voice sounds like the sun shining, through empty rain clouds, onto little puddles on the path through a park. Warm with the acknowledgement of the moment, but the chill ofremembrance and knowledge of worse days. A candle in the cloak of night, flickering and unsteady but strong enough to cast light. Dark in its timbre and strong in its determination much like the woman herself. A voice unparalleled by any. Deeper than dreams, sharper than knives, the storm and the calm.
