Corinne Bailey Rae, the “Put Your Records On” singer, has a new jam-filled, dreamy album called The Heart Speaks In Whispers. Every song is complex, rising and falling, defying expectations and ordinary arrangements.
The opener “The Skies Will Break” being a great example, because the payoff for the building throughout is moved later and later into the song. Once it actually does it reach the climax it is so strong that the waiting only makes it better. One song in particular, “Green Aphrodisiac,” has kept me enthralled in this album.
The instrumentation is gorgeous and warm. Bringing to mind being outside in the summer, in a garden windchimes softly tinkling and the breeze sighing by flowers that lightly sway. Then the bass and drums kick in and it just swept me away. The groove is so good. The bass just plays so well with the drums weaving in and out adding to the rhythm.
Corrine’s voice is also great, the way she breathily touches on words in the chorus and softly sings others is dynamic. You have to pay attention to all of the marvelous little details throughout this song. The masked wind chimes and flutes, the syrupy outro perfection. The backing vocals that add life andbody to the song. The way things fade into reverb and slowly come back up later.
This quality and attention to detail is found on every song. The release of “Caramel,” the playfulness of “Horse Print Dress,” the sparseness of “Been To The Moon,” the upbeat “Ice Cream Colours” and the build up of “Taken By Dreams.” Do not sleep on this album, Corinne Bailey Rae has got the jams.
