I feel so strange writing this, but the first four tracks from DJ Khaled’s Major Key are songs you should listen to.
“I Got The Keys” brings Jay Z back into the fold of popular music after the lambasting of Lemonade. WIth a fun summer anthem with a Future hook. “For Free” is another slinky summer banger, that also has a drake performance that is better than most of VIEWS. “Nas Album Done” besides its ridiculous name is the perfect introduction to the next Nas album. “Holy Key” has two amazing verses, one from Big Sean and one from Kendrick Lamar, and the a massive gospel chorus.
“I Got The Keys” is notable for its Jay Z verses, who addresses everything from owning your own stuff, the big pimpin court case, and how Beyoncé is his wife. The Future chorus is also fun though not one of his best. “For Free” with its bouncy bass line and bright keys, is a pretty enjoyable song that I would definitely play in the car. Drake’s performance here is the notable thing, because he seems like he is having some fun unlike VIEWS.
“Nas Album Done” is my favorite song out of these five. The beat is a banger. I was originally worried about the use of the Fugees sample, but it turned out awesome and tasteful, not overused or misused. Nas came hard too, hopefully something that we can expect from the aforementioned album. His flow and delivery is great as well, it is as Khaled says “classic, timeless.” “Holy Key” Has possibly the best Big Sean verse I have heard, he certainly does not get too far outshined by Kendrick. “Father help us, police doing target practice with real bodies/ Mommas in the streets, crying, standing over a still body/ N*ggas over stressing, we under investigation”. Kendrick has one of his typically fantastic verses. The stunner here is the chorus from Betty Wright. She brings her big voice and shuts the place down. I love that they made a choir out of just her singing different harmonies, it sounds so good. The runs she did at the end of the song are dope, you don’t hear those types of runs in music much anymore.
So, yes I did just recommend some Dj Khaled songs. They are totally worth it though, with great features, fantastic production, a Fugees sample and Betty Wright killing it on “Holy Key”. These few songs are worth your time.
