Got 'Em Like OOOUUU - Young M.A. Drops a Banger
The other week I was listening to my favorite podcast The Read. They talked about this song that was blowing up called “OOOUUU” by Young M.A. Being the fan I am I went and checked it out. I liked it when I first heard it, but then I heard it again on Beyoncé’s Instagram. Now I can’t stop singing it. The melody and simplicity of the hook is perfect for taking over your brain and not allowing you to sing anything other than “OOOUUU.” What is so special about the song is that it combines the indelible fun of “Panda” with classic New York hip-hop to make something special.
The beat is a slapper; the drums hit and the pattern is super dope. The rest of the beat is atmospheric and reverbed out. It sounds like a room filled with smoke that happens to have lights cutting through it. The arrangement keeps the whole song interesting; bass comes in sparingly, risers and transitions sit in the background, and filter sweeps keep the transitions from getting stale.
The big difference from "Panda" is where that song was all hook, this song is almost all verse. M.A takes advantage and shows off her prowess for punchlines and personal anecdotes. “My brother told me fuck em', get that money sis. You just keep on grinding on ya hungry shit. Ignore the hating, ignore the faking, ignore the funny shit. Cause if a nigga violate, we got a hunnit clips.” The line that caught my ear the most was ”You call her Stephanie? I call her Headphanie.”
This song is special. It combines the fun of songs like “Panda” with more classic New York hip-hop. Young M.A sounds like she is having a massive amount of fun and enjoying every moment of this song. The beat is dope. The song is so catchy that you will find that you will sing it randomly throughout the day.
