I first listened to Valerie June in 2013 and at the time I could not enjoy it.
It had all the elements of music I liked, but for whatever reason at that time it did not mesh with me. Then in January of 2017 I hopped into my Google Play Music auto recommendations and her single “Shakedown” for her album The Order Of Time was in there. I took a listen and loved it. I backtracked to her album Pushin’ Against A Stone and found that I loved it as well. Listening to her music got me reflecting on what has changed in my personal life to change my taste significantly. Whatever the problem was, me, her music is fantastic.
“Shakedown” is a romp. The drums have this foot-stamping quality that will make you want to get up and move. The melodic parts are intricate with organ coming in out accentuating the main guitar riffs. The bass line is groovy as all hell and the vocals take the song up even higher. “Astral Plane” is a more subdued song, the mixing on it is fantastic. It sounds massive and feels like a planetarium or going out at night and watching the stars. It is an absolutely beautiful song. “Two Hearts” starts with this gorgeous organ (I believe it is a b3) and then the instrumentation builds the all the way until the end, where it all drops out except for some guitar. The emotion that Ms. june brings to it through her singing is fantastic. The drum sounds used are awesome as well, the kick is especially perfect.
All of these singles have me excited for The Order Of Time. I’m hoping this is all we get for singles, any more would be to many. Everything shown so far is great and I hope the rest of the album is good as these singles.
