Random Things is a bunch of reviews for stuff that I have been listening to.
Stormzy - Gang Signs And Prayer
This is a pretty good album. It has quite a few styles of music from grime, gospel, R&B, and pop. “Blinded By Your Grace,” Parts 1 & 2 caught my attention the first listen the most, because of them I want a project of only gospel from Stormzy. Besides those the first two tracks, “First Things First” and “Cold,” are the perfect beginning for the album. “Velvet” was interesting to me because of the fact that it is built of the intro track of NAO’s For All We Know, it is also a good song in its own right. The last two songs are also great. “Shut Up” is his most famous song and it's not hard to figure out why. The beat is infectious and Stormzy’s energy keeps the song rushing along. “Lay Me Bare” is an ultra personal look at Stormzy’s relationship with his father, his depression, and the loss of his friends. I definitely recommend this album, there is something for everyone and all the songs are well made.
Sampha - Process
This is an early album of the year contender. The production is amazing, the structure of the songs and the album in general is great, the lyrics and vocals are fantastic. There isn’t a skippable song on the entire project. The standouts for me were “Blood On Me,” “Kora Sings,” and “Reverse Faults,” but the whole album is awesome.
Vince Staples - BagBak
Are you ready for me to gush even more about how much I love Vince Staples? “BagBak” has Vince bringing political bars with a new flow over a ludicrous beat. “Prison system broken, racial war commotion/ Until the president get ashy, Vincent won't be votin’/ We need Tamikas and Shaniquas in that Oval Office/ Obama ain't enough for me, we only getting started.” This song is fantastic, I cannot wait for his next project.
Syd - FIN
This album From The Internet’s own Syd is a short affair, filled with a fair share of bangers and jams. “Know” is the clear stand out. The production in general is great and is pretty diverse. If you want some new R&B to listen to this is a good choice.
Future - FUTURE and HNDRXX
They are both fine. Thankfully there are different enough that they never get stale. The songs that stood out most for me were “Fresh Air,” “Rent Money,” and “Incredible.” I wouldn’t recommend these seeing as you could just listen to DS2 instead.
NAO - FAWK the Remixes
I did not love any of these remixes, I’m not sure if it is because I’m too attached to the original songs or that none of these remixes are that good. “Feels Like (LOXE Remix)" is probably the best of the bunch due to the Stormzy feature and how markedly different it is from the original.
Gavin Turek - Good Look For You
This is my favorite of all these projects. I love the sound, the hooks, the groove, the drums, everything about this EP is extraordinary. I would pick a favorite song, but whichever one comes on is my favorite. Please do yourself the favor of listening to this. Shout out to 2 Dope Queens for putting me on to this project.
