If you ever have the chance to visit the Red Wing flagship store in Red Wing, Minnesota, you will recognize the "World's Largest Boot." The boot in question is a larger-than-life replica of the Red Wing 877, an 8" Moc Toe boot that probably stands at the very top of the Red Wing hierarchy of legendary boots.
About a month ago, I was in a town about an hour south of Red Wing on the Wisconsin side of the Mississippi River. While walking along the river, an older woman called out to me, "Are those Red Wing Boots - the 877?" I replied that they were. The woman was filled with both pride and joy - joy that she could pick the 877 out from a distance and pride because she was a life-long employee of Red Wing Shoes.
The woman had sewn boots, including the 877 which she was particularly proud of, in Red Wing for 19 years before moving into an administrative job. In all, she had worked with Red Wing Shoes for 37 years and still does to this day.
The boot itself features an Oro Legacy leather and stretches upward an extra two inches above the standard Moc Toe produce by Red Wing Shoes and other companies like Thorogood, Viberg, or any other North American contemporaries.
Like other Red Wing Moc Toe boots, the outsole is made of Traction Tred Crepe Wedge. The laces for the 8" 877 get an extra 15 inches, 63 total. The boots construction is the standard Goodyear Leather Welt and it features another Red Wing standard in nickle eyelets.
The boot that helped launch Red Wing Shoes to world renown never goes out of style. The process of breaking in this pair of boots will be helped along by the winter where the extra inches will help protect the lower leg and foot from the evil of snow. Eventually, there will be an updated set of pictures, give it a year or two.
